Solve compatibility issues in Windows 7

After Windows Vista launch many people faced problem with compatibility issues with programs which use to run in windows XP very well, therefore even after launch of windows 7 people have not migrated to it having a thought of facing compatibility problems with it.

But today in this post, i will be showing you how to set compatibility for a program to run in windows 7, which was actually meant to run in Windows Vista or XP.

This method will also be applicable in installing certain type of drivers of old windows.

1.> This trick is very short and simple, all you have to do is just right click over the Executable file of a program/application and choose its "Properties" option.

2.> Now you should see a window with loads of tabs such as security, icons etc. There's one another tab in the second row called "Compatiblility". Click over it and tick mark over the dimmed box to enable, "Run this program in compatibilty mode".

3.> Now Just below it you should see a drop down list having all the operating systems with thier service packs listed, for ex. windows xp sp2, sp1 windows vista sp1, sp2.

4.> Select the operating system with which your program may run (you can change this property any time) and apply these settings and run it as administrator.

5.> The Program should now run sucessfully, if it doesn't then try another serpice pack or another operating system from the list, else download a newer version of it which maintains compatibility with newer OS.

Microsoft creates a one trillion pixel, 802 GB image of the night sky

Look at the picture above. It is a toned-down, 500x500 pixel version of an iconic picture. Had we had the audacity (or the facility!) to put up the full blown picture that this actually is, it would have taken you a couple of years to load this page on your normal broadband connection. One terapixels, yes, 1,000,000,000,000 pixels displaying the sky in all its glory and taking up a whopping 802 GB of disk space.

A gigantic effort (literally!) by Microsoft, this picture of the night sky is the largest and the clearest ever. Under the Terapixel project, 1791 pairs of complementary red-blue captures were stitched, thanks to image data from telescopes in California and Australia collected under the Digitized Sky Survey during the past 50 years.

To know the extent of the huge-ness of this picture, gulp this - To view it in all its glory (read pixels), you would need 500,000 High Definition TVs in a grid. Even if you take the higher-DPI route of printing, the photo would be the size of a soccer field.

According to Microsoft, this is the recipe behind the Terapixel photo:

1.> Image data was computed, or digitized, from the plates that were created directly from the telescopes. This raw data was processed by a computer cluster using 512 computer cores (How many does your ‘ultimate gaming-rig’ use? 4 huh?). According to Microsoft, this took about half-a-day. Sounds deflated, if you ask us.

2.> The red and blue complementary pictures were then combined and the pictures were then touched up to correct the variations in brightness, colour saturation, noise and vignetting (darkening of corners). Three hours. Impressive again. We bet those computers weren't running Vista.

3.> It took four hours then as the images were converted into the seamless panorama of beautiful stars.

Save any video from any website which has video contents to stream

This trick is for those who wish to watch youtube/metacafe videos without logging onto internet to stream it again and again, or want to make collection of videos from youtube or metacafe. This trick will always work without any 3rd party softwares such as youtube downloader or IDM.

1.> The very first step is to use a firefox browser or a chrome browser for ease for watching streaming videos.

2.> Watching the video until it completely buffers (light red colored line finishes).

3.> Now open a new tab or window, and on the address bar type: "about:cache" (without quotes) and hit enter key to see the following window.

4.> This window displays location of cache directory, where our video lies. Sort the list of cache files by "date" and "size" by clicking over them respectively. The higher sized file is our buffered video. Copy this scarily named file to your desktop.

5.> Now its time to change the name and extension of this file as "anyname.flv"
the .flv stands for flash video. Note that you must remove tick-mark from the "view folder options" which says "hide extensions of known file types".

6.> Enjoy the video as many no. of times you want.
7.> If you use the Google chrome browser dont worry, you can directly paste this following path into windows address bar:

C:\Users\varun\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cache

Monitor the Energy Power Requirements of Your PC

Joulemeter is a simple application created in Microsoft Research Labs designed to measure the energy used by your computer. Its purpose can be extended to calculating the power required by virtual machines, servers, desktops and noteboks. Even individual software running on the computer can be measured in terms of electricity usage as each program comes with specific stress on the system’s hardware components.

Installing the app does not require too much effort from your part. There are no extra programs pushed in, just Joulemeter all way through. It will install as a service on the system and immediately start monitoring the main components of the system that fluctuate in power usage.

Its free to download from this link.

Main application window is as simple as can be. It shows three tabs, but only one is of continuous interest to you: the one displaying the power usage statistics. There is nothing scary about it except for the values it draws from monitoring the components. Depending on their current load, the values for the CPU and disk fluctuate in Joulemeter. We noticed that a simple file copy or move operation automatically impacts on the power usage of the disk increasing the watts in the application (proportional with the speed of the job). The same behavior was recorded the moment we started to stress the central processing unit.

Four Ways with IPv6 Will Save the Internet

The world is almost out of IP addresses--or at least it's almost out of the IPv4 addresses that IT admins and users are most familiar with. Fortunately, IPv6 has been developed to exponentially expand the pool of available IP addresses while also providing a few other benefits.
To address issues with the current IP protocol in use (IPv4), and to add features to improve the protocol for the future, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) has introduced IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6). Let's look at a few ways that IPv6 will come to the rescue and save the Internet.

1. More Addresses: IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses rather than the current 32-bit addresses allowing for an exponential increase in the number of available IP addresses. Network routing experts have been aware of the limitations of IPv4 addressing since the 1980's--before most of the world even knew the Internet existed, and before the Web became ubiquitous.

With 32-bits, IPv4 only allows for approximately 4.3 billion IP addresses. Since every Web-connected device--server, desktop, notebook, smartphone, tablet PC, and more--must have an IP address, and since the Web has exploded in countries like China and India, the world is rapidly approaching the end of the available IPv4 addresses.

2. Backwards Compatible: IPv6 is backwards compatible with IPv4 so that different networks or hardware manufacturers can choose to upgrade at different times without disrupting the current flow of data on the Internet. Given the world's dependence on the Internet and Web for news, commerce, public safety, national security, and more this is an important feature of IPv6.

Eventually, all IPv4 equipment will be replaced by attrition and IPv6 will be the only address protocol in use. But, that could take decades, so backwards compatibility will be crucial for the foreseeable future.

3. Better Security: IPv6 was designed with encryption and authentication in mind. IPsec is an optional security component of IPv4, but in IPv6 it is mandatory. With IPsec each individual data packet is encrypted and authenticated, making many of the malicious attacks plaguing the Internet today impossible--or at least substantially more difficult.

4. Better Performance: Changes have been made to the way IP packets and headers are formed, and to the way IPv6 routers process the packets to improve performance--resulting in fewer missed or dropped packets, and more reliable and efficient connections. With more people and devices sharing the Internet, and higher demands for VoIP (voice over IP) and video streaming, performance will be more critical than ever.

India's $35 tablet--How Low can it go?

India on Thursday unveiled a prototype tablet computer that would sell for a mere 1,500 rupees, or $35, with the price possibly dropping even further as R&D efforts continue.

Kapil Sibal, the country's Minister for Human Resource Development, showed off the super-cheap touch-screen device in New Delhi as part of a push to provide high-quality education to students across the country. The tablet also comes with a solar-power option that could make it more feasible for rural areas.

The Linux-based computer at first glance resembles an Apple iPad and features basic functions you'd expect to see in a tablet--a Web browser, multimedia player, PDF reader, Wi-Fi, and video conferencing ability. It has 2GB of RAM (but no hard disk, instead using a memory card) and USB ports and could be available to kids from primary school up to the university level as early as next year.

Students from several branches of the Indian Institute of Technology co-designed motherboards for the computer, which the ministry would like to see dropping to $20 and possibly getting as low as $10.

Sibal called the as-yet-unnamed device India's answer to MIT's famed OLPC laptop aimed at children in developing nations, which started off five years ago with a projected cost of $100, but ended up going for $200. In May, Marvell Technologies announced that it would partner with the OLPC foundation to create the hardware for a proposed OLPC tablet, currently named the XO-3, that would go for around $100.

But while the extremely low price of India's newly unveiled tablet is generating much hoopla, the gadget still faces hurdles before it lands in the public's hands.

"This is just a prototype," education expert Zubin Malhotra told Newsxlive. "We need to find people who will be able to manufacture these devices at these price points and continue to develop them going forward."
